During his six years in office, Ramos was widely credited and admired by many for revitalizing and renewing international confidence in the Philippine economy. Prior to his election as President, Ramos served in the Cabinet of President Corazón Aquino, first as chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), chief of Integrated National Police, and later on, as Secretary of National Defense from 1986 to 1991. Benjamin L. Manaois passed away peacefully at Swedish Hospital on July 19, 2016 surrounded by family and friends battling multiple health issues. Ben was born in McKinley, Binmaley, Pangasinan, Philippines on March 9, 1954, the youngest of three siblings. He is survived by his wife, Rosalinda Ofrancia; his son Mylo and spouse Michelle, along with grandchildren Marie, Myla, and Marcus; his sister Milagros Adan and spouse Ding Adan, and their children, Menard, Melanie, and Melody; his brother Mario and spouse Naty and their children, Guada, Dondon and Maja. Though treatment of the disabled is improving - blind people are no longer relegated to dodgy massage parlors where they once foudn steady employment - many changes remain unmade. Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Huebner was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1943 at the age of 17. He originally signed up with the Army Air Corps, but his vision deteriorated after flight training. He then volunteered for the infantry, and was sent to the South Pacific. He describes the conditions his squad encountered in New Guinea, including both the lack of fresh food and a base camp. He contracted both Dengue Fever and malaria while in New Guinea. Huebner's main job in the South Pacific was to provide security to the radar technicians that would set up portable radar units wherever they could. He fought and received medals in the Philippine, British New Guinea, and Dutch New Guinea liberations. Huebner returned home in December of 1945, but remained in the reserves after t...

Bulacan is a province in the Philippines, located in the Central Luzon Region (Region III) in the island of Luzon, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) north of Manila (the nation's capital), and part of the Metro Luzon Urban Beltway Super Region. Bulacan lies in the southern portion of the fertile plains of Central Luzon. The area is drained by the Angat and Pampanga rivers. The Sierra Madre mountain range forms the highlands of Bulacan in the east and is a protected area known as the Angat Watershed Forest Reserve. Angat Lake, which was formed by the Angat Dam is located in that area.
Not knowing very much about the Philippines before I visited, I was pleasantly surprised by Manila and Subic and how they both reminded me of America. The highlight of the trip was getting a chance to visit a Vietnamese boat people refugee camp near Baataan. I met some friendly Pinoys too. The food was great. The transportation readily available. And the landscape extremely beautiful.
